During Stage 4, waiting for the transplant and Stage 5 the surgery the primary role is that of a patient.

Occupying the patient role means following instructions from the medical team, coping with limitations caused by liver failure and challenges of recovery from liver transplantation.

During Stage 6, the patient role starts to fade, and people think of themselves more as transplant recipients rather than transplant patients.

As healing takes place and strength returns it is time to gradually return to pre-illness roles and responsibilities. This will happen gradually. For example returning to the role of a spouse and/or family member.  This return will help relieve caregiver burden, and increase independence for the recovering individual.  Liver transplant recipients and caregivers may underestimate the degree of adjustment required to resume a more “normal” life after transplantation (Littlefield et al., 1996).

Below are 2 worksheets, and a sheet for goal planning.  I use these with patients to help them to plan for return to productive roles. It is helpful both for the person who has received a transplant as well as the caregivers, or others who have been performing roles for them.
